Emma awoke with a start and sat up. She found herself lying in a bed that was precisely her size, as if built for her instead of bought. The pillows were fluffy and pink, and the quilt was made of squares of every pink she could imagine, with strawberries and little unicorns scattered around. The windows were covered with pretty rose-colored curtains, complete with white lacey edges. And a single cute teddy bear was sitting between the top two pillows. The bed was soft, exactly how she liked it, and she sat up and smiled happily as she looked around.
The floor was glossy wood, the color of sand, and a dark pink shaggy rug lay in the very center of the room. An open toybox sat against one wall and all her favorite toys flowed out of it and onto the floor. The walls were covered in brightly colored posters of kittens and daisies and the pink horsie plush that was the main character of her favorite cartoon. The air even smelled delicious here, of snickerdoodles freshly baked and hot chocolate.
âWhere am I?â Emma asked aloud as she hopped down from the bed and started to walk across the room to where the door should be, but there was no door. Just a poster of a rainbow and butterflies. Emma stopped and spun around, the adorable pink lamp on the shiny pink dresser casting a pink glow against her cheek as she did. Nowhere was there a door. Just two windows, one across from the other, and both dark beneath the curtains.
Emma walked over to the nearest one and slowly lifted up her hand and pulled it to the side and gasped at what she saw. For, on the wall beneath the curtain, there was no window, as there should be, but only a poster of a bright blue sky with white fluffy clouds drifting by. Emma spun again, once more, before crumbling down to a sitting position on the floor, in the middle of the soft rug.
Whereâs my mommy? she thought to herself as she looked around and then pulled her knees up under her chin. She knew this place was supposed to make her feel happy and safe, but it didnât. It didnât make her feel that way at all. All she felt was terrified. At least before, when she had been taken, she had had a magical and wonderful woman to keep her company. Now all she had was a room that was far too pink and no way out. Emma was stuck.
